Unfortunately, the rain followed us from Dublin.
You can't take pictures in the Sistine Chapel, but we rented an ipod that told us all about it. It was fascinating. We loved it. If it isn't on your bucket list, put it there. Michelangelo was brilliant.
Johnny didn't last long and, naturally, had to go to the bathroom almost immediately after we walked through (despite the fact that we had all gone just prior to entering the chapel), but that goes with the territory.
Then we headed to St. Peters and home to some pasta and gelato (obviously).
Johnny and the well-worn feet of St. Peter's statue. |
The square was decked out for Pope Francis' inauguration yesterday and signs all around Vatican City welcomed him.
Johnny got to pick the gelato place today and he was darling, looking for the most perfect place overlooking Trevi as it was our last night in Rome. He's picked up my persnicketyness for both flavor and location.
We ate at what seemed to be a real Italian joint. The hostess and, presumably, owner ("Graziella") seemed to be yelling and grumbling at the one host/busboy/etc. etc. the entire time. But maybe that's just how Italian sounds like to a Minnesotan. I've got a video of her doing this but all videos will have to wait. We couldn't resist a picture of her in her element. Check her out!
The kids got a HUGE laugh out of the "naked" pasta they saw at the gelato shop*.
We are up early (i.e. before 11) and headed to Assisi by train tomorrow!
*Thank you Ms.' Carver, Periolet, Mullinax and now Molloy. Johnny's reading is coming along quite well! When I heard him say "what is sex pasta" I just about blew gelato out my nose!!
