St. Patrick's Day Eve Eve (& Eve)

On Thursday night the older girls decided to give Liz and early birthday present! They watched Johnny and Sophie while Liz, Sheila, Dervla and I went into Temple Bar to hear some "Trad Sessions" for St. Patrick's day.

We were lucky enough to get there in time to hear the Hothouse Flowers. And specifically, their song "Don't Go." (The band was about to leave the stage at the end of their performance when I heard Dervla yell "Don't Go!!!" Which, I assumed meant that she wanted them to stay and perform a bit.... Then they performed the song "Don't go.")

That band was awesome and they grew up right around where we live. In fact, they went to the little Irish school on my way to UCD (Colaiste Eoin) and that's when they met to organize the band. They were just fantastic. And, finally, Sheila got to hear some live Irish music.

Here is everyone on the train (Dervla's first appearance on the blog!!) and Sheila and Liz sporting a new line of shoes and purses by KellyLevine.

We went on to a couple of pubs and ended up at O' Donoghues (where The Dubliners started out. Here's their Song for Ireland for your listening enjoyment--just get past the advertisment!).

There was some great live music at O'Donoghues and as the night wore on it ended up being a lovely male vocal/guitarist and a gal playing violin. Liz asked if they would perform "Oh Danny Boy" or if she could/should even ask to have them sing it (Dervla warned her against it). Interestingly, he said it was a "mournful" song and to not ask performers to play it!

Notice the faint shamrock on the head!

Four Short-Pints
 My dad LOVED "Danny Boy."

I will upload some of the music from the sessions when I am linked to a hard line!

We came home and played some cards and headed to bed at the wee hours!
