A Soft Day

It was a "soft" day today, as they say here or, in Gaelic, "la bog".

Essentially, from what I can gather, this means how it is almost every day, which is a little "soft" misty rain.
Here's another interpretation

And another.

And here's some advice for what to wear in Dublin: "The best advice we can offer is that no matter what time of year you intend to visit Ireland, be sure to bring light raingear, a warm sweater and some fine weather clothes."

I'd take it any day over the interminable frigid of Minnesota (although I like that too - I am a good hearty Midwesterner).

I've got a few spare moments this afternoon. Sheila and Johnny went over to Dervla/Oscar/Pierce's house after school (I almost went out looking for them when they weren't here at 3:30 when I showed up and Maggie reported that "Mom" had "left a long time ago to go pick up Johnny." He gets out at 2:30 so I got a little worried. I then got a text and all is good.). Maggie has only a couple of exams left so we will get to history in a moment.

We've got a big weekend ahead, so my posts won't be so dull. Tomorrow is my talk and dinner after, then Saturday Johnny has tennis and we're heading up to Kilmacud Crokes to officially register him for hurling and get him his own helmet. Saturday night we're thinking of heading down to Greystones to hear some music and get some "grub"(a nosy but nice neighbor across the street recommended The Beach House there) and then Sunday is actual hurling and Oscar's birthday party. Then next week will fly by as Maggie has it all off, and Johnny is off on Thursday and Friday. Why not take a break, say the Irish... We've been hard at work for a month! Again, the lovely 80%!

Here is my "commute" to school, starting at Maggie's school (which is about 6 blocks from home).

This is my turn onto the N11 or "Stilorgan"

The Dublin City Center is really not far from here.

You can see in the upper left above the road and trees the Aviva Statium (where they play Rugby!). That is only about 3 stops away from our DART station.

Here are some kids going to school. I often see them carrying hurleys.

Just across the bridge and I'm there!
It's at most a 20 minute bike ride. Lovely, particularly if its not "soft".

  1. Good ole UCD (with the emphasis on the "U"). I hope you're not headed to the on campus pub for your pint. I spent many happy hours there but it is basically just a sticky cement box!

  2. Hi Liz -- you guys should head over.... With your new baby! Sounds like a perfect way to spend FMLA!!! I suspect we will have pints in the sticky box (I have never been there) because I can't imagine any place around campus... So far I've only found a Centra, a kids uniform store, and a bookstore. Strange. I will never understand why bars and coffee shops don't plant themselves across the streets from campuses. UWL suffers this shortage as well!

    1. We would definitely head over but Livi isn't able to get a passport until we're done with finalization, and that won't be for another couple of months - and by then it will probably be too late ;-( We did take her on my work trip to San Diego last week and she was a champion traveler, so it is too bad.

Enjoy the sticky box, a pint of Guinness with black currant (yum! my mouth is watering now), lots of great Irish tea (be sure to hit Bewley's Cafe on Grafton) with some of that amazing irish milk for me!! Oh, and brown bread on the side w/ salmon - delish. Now I'm hungry...
